Course overview
Aims
- Understand the effects of the thermal environment on people.
- Learn to assess and control the risks associated with thermal stress.
You will learn to
- Identify sources of thermal stress within the working environment.
- Understand the nature of thermal strain on the body.
- Make an assessment of the thermal environment through measurement and other methods.
- Evaluate risk from exposure to thermal stress.
- Suggest appropriate control methods for the thermal environment.
Course Format
Course will be classroom
Course Content
- Principles of Thermal Stress: Covers heat stress, heat strain, homeostasis, thermal regulation, and physiological responses to hot and cold environments.
- Effects of Temperature Extremes: Details health effects of excessive heat (heat stroke, cramps, dehydration) and cold (frostbite, hypothermia).
- Thermal Surveys and Measurement: Teaches how to conduct thermal surveys and use equipment to measure air temperature, humidity, air speed, and radiant heat.
- Evaluation of Environments: Covers the use of heat stress indices like Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT), Predicted Heat Strain (PHS), and thermal comfort indices (PMV/PPD).
- Control Methods: Focuses on appropriate control approaches, including engineering controls (e.g., ventilation, wind barriers), management controls (work-rest regimes, monitoring), and personal protective equipment.
- Risk Assessment: Outlines various approaches to risk assessment from professional bodies like the ACGIH and AIOH.
