Course Overview

This Basic Principles Course provides a practical understanding of occupational hygiene for people who need to manage or advise on workplace health issues. It provide a foundation from which to undertake more in-depth study in individual occupational hygiene subjects.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course participants will have a basic understanding of: 

  • the value of occupational hygiene and the role of the occupational hygienist;
  • the range of hazards (physical and chemical) in the workplace;
  • the hazard recognition techniques; 
  • sources and potential routes of exposure; 
  • hazard evaluation, exposure assessment and measurement processes; 
  • methods of controlling exposure; 
  • the management of occupational hygiene programmes. 

Course Format

This course is delivered on Microsoft Teams. Course materials are delivered in advance to participants including those for practical assessments. Exams are also held online.
