Course Overview

This course equips participants with a sound knowledge and tools to identify, evaluate, and control exposure to hazardous substances, ensuring safer and healthier workplaces.
Students will how apply the hierarchy of controls, design effective control strategies, and assess the performance of control measures in real-world environments.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of OHTA 505, participants will be able to identify and assess exposure to hazardous substances, apply the hierarchy of control to develop effective risk control strategies, and select and evaluate appropriate engineering, administrative, and PPE controls. In addition, students will be able to describe the general approach to occupational chemical health risk assessment, including the role of atmospheric monitoring; select appropriate equipment to measure specific airborne contaminants and devices suitable sampling strategies; and present results in a manner that supports health risk assessment and enables management to comply with relevant legislation.

Course Format

OHTA 505 is delivered through a structured, experienced and qualified instructor-led format combining focused theoretical instruction with practical, application-based learning.
The OHTA505 course typically runs over several days, both in-person or virtually, and incorporates interactive lectures, case studies, field sessions and group exercises to reinforce understanding.
Participants are supported with comprehensive OHTA study materials the OHTA 505 manual and are assessed through overnight questions and a written examination that evaluates their ability to apply control principles in real workplace scenarios.

Course Content

OHTA 505 covers the principles and application of controlling hazardous substances in the workplace, including the hierarchy of control, engineering controls such as local exhaust ventilation, administrative measures, and the selection and use of personal protective equipment.
It also addresses methods for evaluating the effectiveness of control measures and applying appropriate strategies for different types of hazardous substances, ensuring practical and effective exposure control solutions.
