Examination: 15 March 2027

Course Overview

Noise-induced hearing loss remains one of the most common occupational diseases worldwide, despite being entirely preventable. The OHTA503 Noise course provides delegates with the knowledge and practical understanding needed to recognise, assess and control noise hazards in the workplace.

This internationally recognised course explores the principles of occupational noise assessment, hearing conservation and noise control. The knowledge gained is widely applied by occupational hygienists, health and safety professionals and occupational health practitioners responsible for protecting workers from the long-term effects of excessive noise exposure.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course delegates should be able to:

  1. Understand the nature and characteristics of occupational noise.
  2. Explain how noise affects hearing and overall health.
  3. Interpret noise exposure measurements and monitoring data.
  4. Apply occupational exposure limits and relevant assessment criteria.
  5. Understand the principles of hearing conservation programmes.
  6. Evaluate factors that influence worker exposure to noise.
  7. Identify and recommend appropriate noise control measures.
  8. Apply occupational hygiene principles to the management of workplace noise risks.

Delegates who successfully achieve these outcomes will be better equipped to support effective hearing conservation programmes and contribute to the prevention of occupational hearing loss.

Course Format

This five-day instructor-led course combines theoretical instruction, practical examples, calculations and interactive discussions to develop a thorough understanding of occupational noise management.

Learning is structured to progressively build knowledge and confidence, enabling delegates to understand not only how noise is measured, but also how assessment results are used to make informed decisions regarding worker protection and workplace risk management.

Course Content

The course examines the principles and practices used to assess and manage occupational noise exposures.

Topics include:

  1. Fundamentals of sound and noise
  2. Anatomy and physiology of hearing
  3. Effects of noise on hearing and health
  4. Noise measurement principles
  5. Sound level meters and dosimeters
  6. Occupational noise exposure assessments
  7. Occupational exposure limits and action levels
  8. Noise surveys and exposure calculations
  9. Hearing conservation programmes
  10. Engineering, administrative and personal protective control measures
  11. Interpretation and communication of noise assessment results
  12. Management of workplace noise risks

These topics provide the essential knowledge framework used by occupational hygiene professionals to evaluate noise exposures, protect worker hearing and support effective occupational health risk management.
