Course Overview

The OHTA504 Asbestos and Other Fibres course provides delegates with a comprehensive understanding of the health risks associated with asbestos and other airborne fibres, together with the principles used to assess and manage these hazards in occupational environments.

Despite regulatory controls in many countries, asbestos remains a significant occupational health concern and continues to be encountered in a wide range of industries. This internationally recognised course examines the characteristics of asbestos and other fibres, their health effects, methods of exposure assessment, and the strategies used to prevent and control exposure. The knowledge gained supports informed decision-making and contributes to the protection of workers from serious occupational diseases.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course delegates should be able to:

  1. Describe the different types and properties of asbestos and other occupationally significant fibres.
  2. Understand the sources and routes of fibre exposure in the workplace.
  3. Explain the health effects associated with asbestos and fibre exposure.
  4. Recognise activities and environments where fibre exposure may occur.
  5. Understand the principles of fibre sampling and exposure assessment.
  6. Interpret exposure data and occupational exposure limits.
  7. Apply occupational hygiene principles to the management and control of fibre-related risks.
  8. Contribute to programmes aimed at preventing occupational exposure and disease.

Delegates who successfully achieve these outcomes will be better equipped to identify fibre-related hazards and support effective workplace health protection measures.

Course Format

This five-day instructor-led course combines structured learning, practical examples, case studies and interactive discussions. Learning is designed to progressively build understanding, enabling delegates to connect scientific principles with the practical challenges of managing asbestos and fibre exposures in occupational settings.

Particular emphasis is placed on translating technical knowledge into practical workplace risk management strategies that support both regulatory compliance and worker protection.

Course Content

The course examines the principles and practices used to recognise, evaluate and control occupational exposures to asbestos and other fibres.

Topics include:

  1. Types and characteristics of asbestos fibres
  2. Other occupationally significant fibres
  3. Sources of occupational exposure
  4. Health effects of fibre exposure
  5. Asbestos-related diseases
  6. Fibre release mechanisms
  7. Exposure pathways and risk factors
  8. Fibre sampling methodologies
  9. Exposure assessment techniques
  10. Occupational exposure limits
  11. Risk assessment principles
  12. Exposure control strategies
  13. Asbestos management programmes
  14. Communication and management of fibre-related risks

These topics provide the essential knowledge framework used by occupational hygiene professionals to assess fibre exposures, prevent occupational disease and protect workers from the long-term health consequences associated with asbestos and other airborne fibres.
