Examination: 15 November 2027

Course Overview

Understanding how hazardous substances affect human health is fundamental to effective occupational hygiene practice. The OHTA507 Health Effects of Hazardous Substances course provides delegates with the knowledge required to understand the relationship between workplace exposures and adverse health outcomes.

This internationally recognized course examines how hazardous substances enter and interact with the body, the factors that influence health effects, and the principles used by occupational hygienists to assess and manage health risks. The knowledge gained forms an essential component of professional occupational hygiene decision-making and supports progression to more advanced occupational hygiene studies.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course delegates should be able to:

  1. Describe the structure and function of major body systems relevant to occupational hygiene.
  2. Explain the routes by which hazardous substances can enter the body.
  3. Understand the principles of toxicology and dose-response relationships.
  4. Recognize factors that influence the severity of health effects.
  5. Explain the health effects associated with common workplace chemical exposures.
  6. Interpret toxicological information used in occupational hygiene risk assessments.
  7. Apply health effect information to occupational exposure assessment and control strategies.

Delegates who successfully achieve these outcomes will be better equipped to understand exposure-related health risks and support informed workplace health protection decisions.

Course Format

This five-day instructor-led course combines structured learning, practical examples and interactive discussions to develop a comprehensive understanding of occupational toxicology and health effects.

The course builds knowledge progressively, allowing delegates to connect scientific principles with real-world occupational hygiene applications. Emphasis is placed on understanding how health effect information supports risk assessment, exposure management and workplace decision-making.

Course Content

The course explores the scientific principles used to understand the health effects of workplace exposures and their significance within occupational hygiene programs.

Topics include:

  1. Basic anatomy and physiology
  2. Routes of entry into the body
  3. Principles of toxicology
  4. Dose-response relationships
  5. Absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination of substances
  6. Acute and chronic health effects
  7. Target organs and systems
  8. Carcinogens, mutagens and reproductive hazards
  9. Occupational diseases associated with hazardous substances
  10. Interpretation of toxicological information
  11. Application of health effect data within occupational hygiene risk assessments

These topics provide the foundation for understanding why occupational exposure limits are established and how occupational hygienists use health effect information to protect workers from occupational illness.
